[ETC-Discussion] Tamer Seatpost Failure

In the "for what it is worth category", the Seat Tamer parallelogram design
has worked well for us for thousands of miles. It has never given us one
bit of trouble. Then again, we have kept up with the maintenance of it and
we have also kept the settings such that the only time it moves is when I
get stupid and hit a large bump!
One of the things that I have noticed (probably because we use the rear
hitch ATOC most of the time)is that carrying the bike on the car subjects it
to a lot of vibration and that vibration causes lots of things to loosen up.
I spend every other ride going over the bicycle and tightening up and
checking things as well as cleaning and lubing the drive chain and timing
chain. The especially annoying vibration related things has to do with the
front brake pads for the disk brake unit. Because there is not a wheel in
place, the vibrations move the pads out of adjustment and it takes applying
the brakes a few times to get them to reseat correctly. This is mostly an
annoying sound issue rather than a braking issue. The only way around this
is to place a large washer between the brake pads. Of course, remembering
to insert that washer and take it out is another thing entirely! :-)
I do not know if it makes a difference or not, but the Seat Tamer post that
we use is Carbon fiber. It is initially more expensive, but it has not
given any problems on either of the two that we own. It does, however,
require that you use car in clamping it so as not to damage the carbon
fiber.
It will be interesting to hear what the folks who make Seat Tamer tell you
when you contact them about this. Let us all know what you hear from them.
Hope everyone is getting a chance to be out while the weather is nicer. Of
course, do not do anything too strenuous since there is an air quality alert
out.
Later,
Ralph and Sheila Furlong
