For the inquiring minds (Sheila)....

Most common comment on the empty tandem seat:

"You know you're missing your rider?"
(or the word Stoker if they know the terminology and expressed in a 
concerned tone of voice)

That was a once a week inquiry until I put up the rear sign in April 2008:
BIKE POOL - One less bike on the road

which is the sign that Thyce commented on.  Now the missing rider comment 
happens about once a month.  Other comments of note:

"Nice setup!" (from a guy that drafted from behind for 6 miles)
"That must ride like a hog!" (from a woman commuter waiting for a light to 
change)
"Have you had any takers?"

That last one caught me off guard - I replied that the seat was reserved for 
my spouse.

My usual reply to the empty seat comment is - "It's like driving a car that 
has empty seats."

No one has made the comment regarding my riding by myself (not yet anyway): 
"She's not pedaling!"
Barb's favorite rebuttal to that common saying from motorists:  "I'm 
MANAGEMENT!"

On grocery nights, I hook up to the BOB trailer and the trailer becomes the 
attraction instead of the empty seat as cargo trailers are not common on the 
Sammamish Trail.  The empty tandem seat combined with a trailer is easier to 
ride - I suppose it's like a tightrope walker with a balancing pole.......
