Thanks to everyone who weighed in with solutions and offers of assistance. 







Here is where our little drama resides now. 







John at R&E  suggested two plans: 







- build up a Phil Wood hubbed, Santana-spaced  rear wheel. 



- buy a Shimano hubbed wheelset already built at the shop and insert a 160 

length axle. 







The Shimano tandem wheelset will be about $100 less cost. I said go ahead an 

order the axle.
