Eric-

You probably don't want to hear this, but if the difference were only $100, I would go with the Phil Wood, which is a far better and more durable than the Shimano hub.  There really is no comparison between the two.

You also probably don't want to hear this, but I have heard a lot of negative feedback on R&E built tandem wheels.  In particular, I have known a number of persons in ETC who have had newly built wheels built by R&E that rapidly lost tension.  (I saw one of them firsthand where the spoke nipples were finger tight after only 200 miles.)  There are a number of standard things that wheelbuilders do to stabilize, correct alignment, and relieve tension while building wheels, so it is very hard to understand these reports about R&E.  But, I have heard them from at least 3 tandem riders, and as I said, I saw one of them firsthand.  So, if I were you, I would be fully prepared to adjust and maintain the wheels yourself during your tour.

Thanks to everyone who weighed in with solutions and offers of assistance.

Here is where our little drama resides now.

John at R&E  suggested two plans:

- build up a Phil Wood hubbed, Santana-spaced  rear wheel.

- buy a Shimano hubbed wheelset already built at the shop and insert a 160 length axle.

The Shimano tandem wheelset will be about $100 less cost. I said go ahead an order the axle.
