Tim-

Glad you are staying on the list.  We don't want to lose you or anyway else.  Given your personal history, your concerns are more than understandable and warranted and are a good lesson.  It never hurts to raise these questions and require reasonable answers.

I know the ETC Board wants to be sure our members are comfortable with how we are handling these matters.

Thanks to all who took the time to discuss the Facebook issue. When I first came across the Facebook issue I was following it out of interest due to the fact that three times I and my family have been the victims of breech of information. Twice due to hackers being able to enter supposedly verysecure data banks and once due to the loss of a employee's computer which contained personal data which should not have been in the computer. The concern was that this information could be used to back track into private computers and compromise  the e-mail lists and communications in these computers. We so far have not had any problems but these businesses were required to provide us with five years of free credit check service as well as computer security program. These are some of the same issues which are starting to show on Facebook (according to the various articles and new releases). This prompted my questions about ETC and Facebook. What individual members do with Facebook is their own concern as long as it doesn’t compromise the rest of the members. I will continue to belong to the discussion list as I do feel this an important method for members to communicate. I also feel, as some of the other members have expressed, that there are legitimate concerns and this should have been presented to the members. Again thanks for the discussion.  Tim

Tim-

Without getting into other problems with Facebook, information about ETC consists of a link to our website and whatever personal information that ETC members choose to share about themselves.  I don't see anything of concerrn.  You can take a look for yourself.

There is no exchange of electronic data between ETC and Facebook and its servers.  ETC's policy with regard to member information is stated on our website.

I sincerely hope that you and others do not drop off this listserv as it is one of the ways we are able to communicate with one another.

I am sure that Bob will fix the wayward link to the old website.  That odd message you saw was probably a programmer's sense of humor.  The old website will likely be left up for only a short period of time.

Dave... Are you implying there is no validity to the recent articles in the
news and PC magazine?  Tim

A group "on Facebook" does not put any data about the group's membership on
Facebook.  Lots of big corporations are on Facebook -- do you think that
puts their corporate directories on line?  Of course not.  The FBI, CIA and
NSA are all on Facebook, after all.  The only way there will be any
connection between you and ETC on Facebook is if you create one by creating
a Facebook account and "friending" ETC.
