The first place I would look is Craig's List.  I have sold a couple of tandems (Rodriguez and Kuwahara) at reasonable prices.  You need to monitor it on a daily basis as good buys go quickly:

A friend of mine just asked me about buying a used tandem and I told him I'd 
do some searching around for a source.  They would probably take a medium 
sized frame as he is around 5'10"-5'11" and his wife is around 5'6".  They 
need to look around at some of the local shops to get an idea as to what 
they'd like but if you know of a well maintained bike for sale, can you let 
me know please?  I mentioned to him the online classifieds at Tandem Mag and 
the Hobbes list.  The new ETC website has a lot of good resource links as 
well.
